The Marchant-Holliday School has been established in North Cheriton for over 40 years. It is a residential/day school for approximately 40 boys in the 7-12 year old age range who are experiencing emotional and behavioural difficulties. The school has great experience of teaching disturbed children and can cater for a wide variety of maladjusted behaviour, emotional difficulty and associated learning difficulties. We also have experience of working with pupils who have Aspergers Syndrome and dyslexia.
The school provides a secure, caring environment and we aim to help each pupil develop his full potential for social, emotional, physical and intellectual growth. We consider the children's happiness at school to be very important and emphasis is placed on developing self confidence and self esteem.
The curriculum is carefully planned to promote success and to be relevant to the needs of the individual. Our pupils receive the full National Curriculum and individual learning support is available to facilitate the acquisition of skills and knowledge.
Pupils are encouraged to examine their behaviour and we develop acceptable behaviour patterns with the use of praise and rewards and a consistent supportive structure. We try at all times to be positive and set achievable developmental targets through individual education plans and individual care plans. Experienced counselling is available to pupils and psychiatric help can be obtained through our local health trust.
The school is situated in the heart of the Somerset countryside and has excellent road and rail links with London and all parts of the south of England. The school consists of a country house set in 9 acres of woodland, field and gardens. We have 6 well equipped classrooms, a science and technology room, home economic room and sports hall. There is also a heated outdoor swimming pool, activity rooms, a football pitch and a wide range of outdoor activities.
Living accommodation is attractive and comfortable and emphasis is placed on providing facilities of a high standard. Great care is taken to ensure the safety of all children at school and there are regular visits by an independent counsellor.
The school has an experienced teaching and care staff team and our matron is a registered nurse.
